4 Reasons Science and the Bible Do Not Contradict

Ask many atheists why they do not believe in God, and they'll likely say "science." At least that's what Bill Nye has repeatedly said throughout his years in the public eye. He likes to throw out the word science as if it is an entity with a mind of its own that constantly disproves the illiterate straw man he builds up called religion.

Bill Nye does not believe in God because science...

If you ask me, Mr. Nye has gone a little loopy from being called the "Science Guy" so many times and he now thinks he actually IS science. Regardless of what Bill says, his opinions aren't automatically scientific fact just because he has so much power in the scientific community.

Many atheists mirror Bill’s thoughts that somehow science and religion are unable to co-exist even though they are unable to list an example of where science and the Bible contradict.

Maybe even worse are those Christians who reject any scientific theory, no matter how well-proven it is, based on their misunderstanding that science would someone undermine their faith.

So let’s get started with the list.

1. It is Misinterpretation, not Biblical Passages that are Scientifically Inaccurate

The most commonly cited things that atheists object to about Christianity is that the Bible disagrees with any form of evolution and every Christian thinks the Earth is only a few thousand years old. Unfortunately, they are right that some Christians do completely object to those things assuming that the myths they heard from other Christians growing up are true.

However, most of the time these misconceptions come from the English translations of the Bible and are erased upon looking back at Hebrew words. For instance, many people look at the creation of the Universe in Genesis as an example of scientific ignorance because it “claims” that God made the Earth in 6 days. What they don’t know is that the word for “day” in Hebrew could also mean age or extended period of time thus allowing for the billions of years necessary for the Universe to progress beyond the point of Creation.

To date, I haven’t seen a scientific study or been made aware of a fact that actually contradicts Biblical truth rather than contradicting mistranslation of our English versions of the Bible.

2. The Bible Encourages Science
A common misconception is that to believe in God takes blind faith. Both atheists and extreme fundamentalists were taught that people are to believe in God solely because God said so. There is no questioning God, having doubts, and definitely no looking to science for answers.

This sort of thinking is absolute poison to a mind that was created to be intelligent and is the polar opposite of what the Bible teaches us to do.

There are tons of verses to support this argument, and many of them are listed in the article published by “God and Science” found here: Does the Bible Teach Blind Faith?
3. Science isn't an Entity with a Mind of Its Own
The scientific method is one in which you create a hypothesis, plan a study, do the study, and evaluate that hypothesis based on collected data. Unfortunately, this process is done by humans with the capability for faulty human interpretation. Often times, the interpretation of data differs from person to person which is why real science is done in a transparent manner that can be replicated by other scientists.

If multiple similar studies are done on the same hypothesis and achieve the same result, then we can be much more confident in the conclusion of that study.

Anytime someone says “science has proven…” what they really should say is “a human interpreted the data of an experiment in this manner…” Science doesn’t DO itself, nor does it prove or disprove anything. Studies may prove or disprove specific facts or statement, but a person should only believe a study if they or a trusted authority has verified that study to be credible.

So from this standpoint, it is impossible for “science” to disagree with something unless Science is the name of a dude in a lab coat. So science and the Bible cannot actually contradict by definition.

4. God Doesn’t Lie
Many Christians mistakenly believe that all of science’s finding which contradict their previous perceptions of the universe can be explained through God’s divinity. For example, all of the evidence that points to the universe being billions of years old is explained by some people to be placed there by God thousands of years ago so that the universe could function in a logical manner.

Unfortunately, that would also make God a liar. Why would he need to trick humans into disagreeing with science and misunderstanding the universe? What purpose would that serve? Actually, I doubt that’s the case. It seems more likely that he actually made the universe billions of years ago and that’s why the evidence says that.

The fact that your vision of the universe and the vision shown by the data aren’t matching up isn’t a result of God’s trickery, it’s a result of your own misinterpretation of the Bible (see #1). To reject scientific findings is to reject that aspect of God's creation. If you believe that existence itself is evidence of God, then you must believe that the study of existing things is an extremely important part in understanding God. To reject findings about how existing things work is therefore an insult to God's creation.
